Walk with the Porters of Miss Porter’s House, Newcastle West. Take a guided stroll around the family’s neighbourhood and hear about places brought to life with stories from the museum collection. Start at Miss Porter’s House and finish there with scrumptious refreshments and a tour of the museum.

Newcastle West is changing rapidly but it’s possible to connect the past, present and future and walk in the footsteps of the Porter family of Miss Porter’s House, Newcastle’s only National Trust property. Stroll past Herbert, Ella and Hazel’s school, the remains of Steel Street Gasworks and rail-line opposite their house, the flood-prone Cottage Creek, shops patronised by Florence Porter and other locations familiar to the family in the early years of the twentieth century. The Miss Porter’s House Museum contains photographs, post cards, business correspondence, receipts, memorabilia and many other items linking the family to their neighbourhood. Hear places brought to life with stories from that collection and connect with the history of Newcastle West today. The short 2 km walk which starts and finishes at Miss Porter’s House will take about two and a half hours including a plated afternoon tea and visit to the museum. A great way to spend an afternoon.
