As Australia's second oldest city, Newcastle is a region rich with unique history. Above the harbour sits Fort Scratchley, the only fort in Australia to have engaged the enemy in a maritime attack. At the height of WWII, the fort returned fire at a Japanese submarine shelling BHP and the historic site is now preserved as a military museum. The Bogey Hole also serves as a timeless example of Newcastles historic heritage and convict past. Carved into ocean rocks by convict labour in 1819 the pool is still a favourite of swimmers today.
