Shipwreck Walk  
Stroll along the Stockton Breakwall for a fascinating look at the history of ships lost off the coast of Newcastle – free information guide available from the Newcastle Visitor Information Centre.
Blackbutt Reserve 
A popular nature reserve with several walking trails and native animal and bird life to observe – admission is by donation, accessible from Carnley Avenue, Lookout Road and Freyberg Street, Kotara.
Hunter Wetlands Centre
A wide variety of walking tracks which provide excellent viewing locations for birdlife – admission is $5 for adults, $3 concession and $2.50 for children, located off the roundabout on Sandgate Road, Shortland.

Hunter Regional Botanic Gardens
Situated north of Newcastle on the Pacific Highway at Heatherbrae – admission is free, guided walks available on Sunday at 11am and 2pm.
Great North Walk  
250km diverse bush walking track stretching along the coast from Sydney to Newcastle – maps available for $11.30 (or $15.30 including postage) from Newcastle Visitor Information Centre.

Glenrock State Conservation Area
Explore the nature trails from the scenic Leichardt Lookout down to the idyllic Glenrock Lagoon. 

Fernleigh Track
