The annual Kilgour Prize for figurative and portrait painting awards $50,000 for the most outstanding work of art, as judged by a selection panel. A People’s Choice prize of $5,000 is also awarded.

Born in 1900, Jack Noel Kilgour was known for his academic modernism, many of his works were paintings of urban landscapes and portraiture. His contemporaries included Jean Bellette, William Dobell, Paul Haefliger, Eric Wilson and his wife Nancy Kilgour, with whom he established a significant artistic partnership. His work is well represented in the Newcastle Art Gallery collection, as well as in significant state and national collections.

'Like Us' is an exhibition of sculptures, paintings, drawings and video works by internationally respected Australian artist Patricia Piccinini. The exhibition premieres new works alongside significant pieces from the last fifteen years, including two important works from the Newcastle Art Gallery collection.Like Us presents an immersive world where the natural and the artificial meet and mingle. At every turn the viewer encounters unexpected places and unusual occupants that are both unsettling and appealing. Entry is free.

Nov - Jan 26: Christmas Lights Spectacular

Dec 28 - Jan 4: Australian 19 Foot Skiff Championships

The 2014 - 2015 Australian 16 foot (and 13 foot) Skiff Championships are scheduled to be sailed at Belmont (Lake Macquarie) between 28 December 2014 and 4 January 2015.

February 6 – 9: Australian Bowl Riding Championships

The Festival promises a contest that will exhibit some of Australia's best bowl riders.

This is the first true "Nationals" skateboard competition for any discipline within skateboarding in Australia. It has four divisions to cover the whole rider spread, rather than one group within a group; Under 18s, Women, Pro/Am Open, Masters 40 plus. It is open to all competitors.

February 14: Sting and Paul Simon On Stage

February 18: Suzi Quatro Concert

Celebrating 50 years of performing, Suzi Quatro returns in January 2015 for her last Australian tour. With 30 Australian tours under her belt, this will be the final chance for Australian fans to see their rocker Suzi on stage.

Between 1973 and 1980 Suzi Quatro featured in the British charts for 101 weeks and to date sold over 55 million records including hits, 48 Crash, Too Big, Devil Gate Drive, Daytona Demon, The Wild One, She's In Love With You, Rock Hard and her duet with Chris Norman, Stumblin' In. Suzi was one of the first rock and roll acts to tour to Russia where she performed to 500,000 people in six weeks in 1989.

February 20 - 27: Lakefest 2015

Lakefest is a celebration of Lake Macquarie's aquatic lifestyle and rich maritime history. The festival kicks off on February 20 2015 with the Heaven Can Wait pre-race dinner and will continue through to February 27.

The Heaven Can Wait regatta involves sailing yachts, dinghies and skiffs racing around Lake Macquarie for up to 24 hours and raises money for Cancer Council NSW.

Lakefest will include sailing events and water-based sporting and social activities including a Twilight Race, Paddlefest, and Variety Splash.

February 21 - May 10: The Making of Midnight Oil Exhibition

The band that inspired a generation is the focus of a stunning exhibition coming to Newcastle in 2015.Developed by Manly Art Gallery and Museum, The Making of Midnight Oil examines the band's impact on social and cultural history across a 40 year period.

The exhibition showcases rare and iconic items including stage props, instruments, protest banners, hand written lyrics, photographs and posters sourced from public and private collections as well as the band's own archives. February 21: Light Up Newcastle Lantern Walk 

The Light Up Newcastle Lantern Walk will celebrate the Chinese New Year 2015. Join an evening walk with people carrying Chinese lanterns starting from two locations on the harbour and meeting at the Maritime Centre in Harbour Square at Honeysuckle. As people walk with lighted lanterns and the sun sets over Newcastle, this will form a snake along the water front of Newcastle Harbour as people make their way into the Honeysuckle Precinct.

The event will be held between 4pm-8pm finishing fireworks at 9pm. This is a fundraising event to support the Newcastle Mission to Seafarers at Wickham.

March 8: Loop the Lake 

Loop the Lake is a family fun cycle around Lake Macquarie organised by the Rotary Club of Warners Bay. Route Marshals, St. John Ambulance and Police will be monitoring the race. The ride will be on rain or shine!

The 16 kilometre Easy Loop starts at 8:30am from Lakeside Park Recreation Reserve, Belmont South. The 50 kilometre Part Loop starts from 8:30am at Morisset Railway Station Dora Street Carpark. The 85 kilometre Loop starts at 7am (you may start earlier if you wish) at Speers Point Park.

March 27 - 29: Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival

The Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival is now in its second decade and has established itself as one of the Hunter's premier festivals, featuring all things 1950s - rock n roll, cars, music, fashion and dancing.

March 28: Folk in Broke

 

In great news Folk in Broke is returning in March 2015 and it's going to be an exciting new direction for one of the best little festivals about!

Folk In Broke is a NO BYO alcohol or food event. Glass will not be permitted on site and all bags will be inspected upon arrival by very friendly security staff. Please note Folk in Broke is an All Ages event however any person under-18 must be accompanied by a guardian of parental age to enter the festival.
