Cultural Ramble

Newcastle has gained national recognition for its unique cultural identity and diversity of rich cultural experiences. As well, the city is a vital regional hub for artistic expression and exhibition.

This ride meanders through Newcastle’s Civic Cultural Precinct, which houses many inner city art galleries, historically significant buildings and monuments, public art, performance art spaces and a superb library with a large reference section and public internet access.

Arguably Australia’s finest regional gallery, Newcastle Region Art Gallery hosts a constantly changing program of exhibitions as well as housing the most significant collection of Japanese ceramics in the country. Exhibitions in recent years have included shows of the calibre of Annie Leibowitz and Henri Cartier Bresson, the Archibald Prize and ArtExpress.

Wheel through leafy streets stopping off to visit the many galleries and interesting buildings along the way. Catch your breath in beautiful Civic Park, relaxing under one of the giant fig trees or by the cooling waters of the stunning fountain.

If you’ve built up a thirst after all that riding, pedal a little further to Darby Street with its eclectic mix of cafes and restaurants and a chance to recharge and reflect.

Interesting side rides for those with extra energy:

Outback Art: This fascinating art gallery in Mayfield houses an extensive collection of indigenous art.

The Junction: Visit John Earle Gallery to see stunning watercolours and oils that capture in vivid detail the wonderful coastline to be found in this part of the country.
