With over 182 hectares of scenic natural bushland and variety of native fauna and flora species, Blackbutt Reserve offers an authentic Australian wildlife experience only moments from Newcastle CBD. Visitors can engage in both recreational and educational pursuits as they explore over 10 kilometres of stunning walking trails, unwind in peaceful picnic and playground areas and interact with our environment through unique wildlife exhibit, tours and encounters.

Blackbutt Reserve provides nature trails, wildlife exhibits, childrens playgrounds and recreational facilities. It is the perfect place for a relaxing family picnic or to explore the wonders of nature.

Consisting of Eucalypt Forests and pockets of significant remnant vegetation, Blackbutt boasts a restored Rainforest providing habitats for a number of rare and vulnerable species. It also features wildlife exhibits which are modern, spacious and allow close viewing of the animals.

The Reserve also offers a range of recreation opportunities including barbeques, playgrounds, picnic facilities, photography, bird watching and peaceful areas for relaxation. Blackbutt has over 10 kilometres of tracks providing the ideal location for enthusiastic walkers, joggers and other fitness enthusiasts. Tracks range from short and gentle to long and hilly.

Free feeding times daily (except for Christmas Day, Anzac Day and Good Friday), 10.30am Wombats, 10.45am Lorikeets, 1.30pm Nocturnal Animals and 2pm Koalas. Wildlife Exhibits open 10am to 5pm every day (Except Christmas Day, Good Friday and before 1pm Anzac Day), entry prior to 4.30pm to allow for gate closure at 5pm.

Entry to the Reserve is FREE. There is a parking fee per vehicle to park at the main entrances located at Carnley Avenue and Richley Reserve carparks.

Blackbutt Kiosk - one-stop shop for information on Blackbutt Reserve, gifts and souvenirs, cold drinks, tea and coffee, and a range of confectionary items.

Public Koala talks are held at 2pm each day (except Christmas Day and Good Friday). No Booking Required. Reptile Show - held at 11am on weekends and daily in the school holidays in the Wildlife Arena. No Booking Required. Tickets can be purchased at the Blackbutt Kiosk. Private Animal Encounters available. Fees apply and bookings essential.

Critter Encounters - hands-on fun for onsite parties and events. Meet, touch and handle some of Blackbutt's favourite native critters and learn about them and their habitats. Great for kids parties. Each child will receive a free activity pack to search for the animals on the boardwalk. Fees apply and bookings essential.
