School holiday activities in Newcastle

Looking for family fun and kids' activities these School Holidays?

We have activities for all ages to keep everyone busy and happy from Saturday 21 December 2019 to Monday 3 February 2020.

From 6 - 26 January 
Want to experience the great outdoors without breaking the budget?

Then take a trip to Blackbutt Reserve for an up-close and personal look at some of Australia’s most revered wildlife. Hear experts discuss Australia’s reptile wildlife during the popular reptile shows daily from 6 January at 11am. Craft activity also occurs in the Wildlife Arena at 1pm on weekdays from 6 January. Tickets are $3 per person, per activity.

Families can alsseveral different animal sanctuaries between 10:30am and 2pm for an opportunity to watch koalas, birds and wombat being fed.

From 4 - 26 January
Help the kids enjoy art from an early age by coming along to Newcastle Art Gallery’s popular Art Cart program. Art Cart allows children to engage with exhibitions on display through discussion and art making, all free of charge. Led by Gallery educators, Art Cart is held every Saturday and Sunday from 10:30am-12:30pm. Every school holidays, the Gallery also hosts 2 weeks of low-cost art workshops for kids aged 5-12.

Kids will have the opportunity to create their own hanging Chinese decoration with tassel and embellishments inspired by an exhibition exploring Chinese Australian art: BETWEEN TWO WORLDS.

The exhibition WISH YOU WERE HERE will showcase a diverse range of landscapes and will inspire kids to create their own summer-styled beach scene using modelling clay. They’ll learn how to hand shape sea life such as a crabs and fish.

The Gallery is open every day of the holidays between 10am-5pm and entry is free. The gallery is closed Christmas and Boxing Day but open on New Years Day.

From 3 January to 2 February​;
Experience a sensory sensation inside a bright and colourful garden where your imagination can run wild. Created by local artist Bliss Cavanagh, the Summer Sensory Garden is a place where children can dress up as an insect and creep, crawl or dig their way through fluffball flowers.

Get hands on and create your own morphing mini beasts in our workshops or for those seeking more science-minded activities then imaginative fun, there’s a series of free science shows taking place. InsectMania offers people the opportunity to learn about various insects and get up close and personal with tiny-sized critters. See how they behave and the types of traits they display – you’re sure to be shocked and impressed at the same time.

Put your creative brains to the test by taking part in beach-themed activities at Newcastle Libraries. There is an array of different creative classes being hosted across the City and suburbs to keep the kids entertained. Whether creating colourful sand art, decorating beach bags, or testing the kids speedy Lego-making abilities, Newcastle Libraries offer an extensive school holiday schedule for everyone.
