Steel Magnolias

A contemporary classic about female friendships

Written by American playwright Robert Harling and based in his personal experience with his sister, this comedy-drama tells the story of six southern women and how their bonds of friendship see them through both good times and bad.

Set in the mythical southern town of Chinquapin, Louisiana, the action takes place in Truvy’s Beauty Salon where anyone who is anyone gets their hair done. Beauty salon owner Truvy dispenses shampoo along with sage advice to all who enter and is helped at the salon by her assistant Annelle, a newcomer to town, who has some secrets of her own. Customers include Miss Clairee, an eccentric millionaire and social leader, Ouiser, a wealthy curmudgeon, M’Lynn and her daughter Shelby “the prettiest girl in town”, who is about to marry her sweetheart Jackson, a “good ole boy”. Within the haven of the Beauty salon they share their personal challenges with each other and one person’s news will ultimately affect them all.

Made into an award winning film starring Sally Field, Julia Roberts and Shirley MacLaine in 1989, Steel Magnolias is a poignant look at the enduring strength of women, “as delicate as a flower and strong as steel”.
