Bushland to WetlandsOne for the nature lovers, this ride takes you from remnant eucalypt bushland along the Fernleigh Track to the Ramsar - listed Shortland Wetlands, which teems with native flora and fauna.
The newly constructed Fernleigh Track is a shared cycleway that follows a former railway corridor, complete with restored (and illuminated) railway tunnel, originally opened in 1892.
From the Fernleigh Track follow the trail through the heritage areas of Broadmeadow, Lambton, Jesmond and Birmingham Gardens. These suburbs boast beautiful parks and delightful heritage houses. Also found along this trail is EnergyAustralia Stadium, home of the mighty Newcastle Knights rugby league and Newcastle United soccer teams.
Upon arrival at the Shortland Wetlands Centre, enjoy a well earned break in the cafe overlooking the 45 hectare site. Take a walk on the wild side along the trails and boardwalks or hire a canoe and paddle around Ironbark Creek.
The return sector of the ride skirts the campus of the University of Newcastle, set on 125 hectares of natural bushland and well worth a detour. During semester several bars on campus can oblige with a refreshing ale or meal. These bars, which tend to be the hub of student activity, also frequently provide live entertainment.
Continue through the suburbs of Waratah, Georgetown and Adamstown which were once home to families of BHP workers. With the closure of the BHP steelworks these suburbs are experiencing a renaissance.
