Beaches, Baths, Dunes and Jets

This scenic ride will take you past some of Australia’s best beaches, across busy Newcastle Harbour and on to the quiet countryside of Fern Bay.

The ride commences at Merewether Beach (keep an eye out for fourtime world surfing champ Mark Richards who still regularly surfs there). Follow the coastline which features enticing sandy beaches, popular surfing and swimming spots and sparkling ocean baths.

Newcastle is also the home of the nation’s first Ocean Baths and you will find several others along the coast – ranging from the small convicthewn Bogey Hole and Soldiers Baths to large 100 metre pools. Look out for the Bathers Way Coastal Walk signage that tells tales of Newcastle’s indigenous and convict heritage, culture and natural history.

From Nobbys Beach, follow the harbour foreshore to the ferry terminal at Queens Wharf. Catch the ferry to Stockton (bikes ride free) where you will have an impressive view of the city from across the harbour.

Take time to explore the fascinating Shipwreck Walk along Stockton Breakwall and enjoy views across the Stockton Bight Sand Dunes, the largest moving coastal sand mass in the southern hemisphere. Then take Fullerton Road to the Pacific Highway and on through verdant countryside to Fern Bay.

Stop in at the café at Fern Bay for a refreshing break or, if you’re interested in aviation history, keep pedalling to Fighter World located at Williamtown RAAF base, home of the leading edge FA18 fighter squadrons, for a great hands on Aircraft Museum experience.

After returning to Newcastle, ride through historic Cooks Hill and visit Darby Street for a great mix of cafes, restaurants and boutique shopping. Grab an outdoor table and enjoy a coffee and the passing parade before the short return trip to Merewether.

If you still have some energy, pack up the bikes and take a stroll along the Bathers Way Coastal Walk which follows the coast all the way to Newcastle Harbour.
