The Port of Newcastle an economic and trade centre for the Hunter Valley and for NSW.
The Port of Newcastle is the economic and trade centre for the resource rich Hunter Valley and for much of the north and northwest of NSW. It is Australias oldest and 2nd largest tonnage throughput port, with more than 3000 shipping movements handling cargo in excess of 90 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), of which coal exports represent more than 90% of total throughput tonnage.
The Port of Newcastle is managed by Newcastle Port Corporation, which encourages growth in new trade, whilst at the same time maintaining the growth in existing trades. Several projects at varying stages look set to both further diversify the ports use, and steadily increase the number and types of ships entering the port. Considerable planning is being undertaken now, to prepare the port, its pilots and facilities, to handle the increased traffic and variety in shipping.
