Paintings, drawings, watercolours, prints and sculpture are included in the extensive range of media. Major artists are represented: such as John Glover, Arthur Streeton, Margaret Preston, Grace Cossington-Smith William Dobell, Russell Drysdale, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Fred Williams, Brett Whiteley and Rosalie Gascoigne. The Gallerys 20th century Australian and Japanese ceramics are among the finest in the country. As well, there is a significant collection of Aboriginal bark paintings from Arnhem Land, which were acquired in 1963.
The NAG hosts and mounts its own exhibitions and stages major travelling exhibitions, some of which attract over 40,000 visitors in their six-week showings.
Experienced Gallery Guides provide a vital service. They conduct tours of the Gallery, its collection and exhibitions for special interest groups, especially from schools.
