Newcastle might be known for its craft beers, but it’s also fast becoming one of Australia's best distillery regions.

Here’s our top picks for the best Newcastle distilleries to visit.

Earp Distilling Co.

For a great alternative to a traditional pub or bar try Earp Distilling Co. in Carrington. The Earp family, who have operated businesses in Newcastle since the late 19th century, today operate this swanky gin distillery and bar in a repurposed tile warehouse space.

Earp Distilling Co. plays host to a range of events, such as spirit and blind tastings, gin blending classes and distillery tours.

You can even go to Gin School where you can become a distiller for a day!

Newy Distillery

Part bar, part distillery, Newy Distillery is a local hidden gem.

Its award-winning Signature Gin is a must try, and if you happen to be in Newcastle on a Friday, don’t miss Newy Distillery’s Tastings and Platter Night to sample some of the best spirits and local produce on offer.

Styx Brewery

Housed in an old coal testing building in Carrington, Styx Brewery is the perfect place to meet up with friends for a lazy afternoon or evening date.

Initially focused on producing quality IPA and Pale Ale brews, the brewery has recently turned its attention to creating a range of local-ingredient inspired gins — and fan favourite, limoncello.

Further afield

Newcastle is the perfect base for spirit lovers to explore distilleries further afield in the Hunter region.

Newcastle Distilling Company is a small-batch, craft distillery with locations in the Hunter Valley and Lake Macquarie. With over 36 unique and aromatic spirits to try, you can’t go wrong.

Located in the heart of the Hunter Valley, Pokolbin Distillery is a must-visit because of its range of locally-made gins, vodkas and liqueurs that are inspired by the distillers' Polish heritage and Australia's native botanicals.

Just around the corner, Hope Estate is a family owned and operated winery, brewery, distillery and cellar door that’s set on some of the biggest and most impressive grounds in the region. Be sure to book in to try one of the three spirit paddles - choose from their locally-made gin, naked gin or vodka and ouzo variations.

Drop into the Hunter Distillery to sample its range of locally-made top shelf spirits, including gin, vodkas, liqueurs, and schnapps. The award-winning Copperwave Distilled Gin is a must-try - distilled in the traditional London Gin method. Cheers to that!
