In 1988, a team representing the Newcastle Knights first ran out onto the playing field. In terms of natural talent and financial resources the team was not well endowed. However in terms of courage and commitment the same team was without peer.In those formative years, while the Club's win/loss record remained less than overwhelming, a fearful reputation was simultaneously being forged by the blue and reds, a reputation which the Club has carried as a badge of honour ever since.
As time has elapsed, success on the field has become more frequent. At all times however, the standards set in those formative years have applied. Names like Sargent, McCormack, Harragon, and Butterfield have become synonymous with what it means to play in the red and blue. The tradition has been faithfully perpetuated through the likes of Johns, Buderus and Gidley.

This is your chance to witness an amazing tribute to an amazing band at Wests Leagues Club, Sunday 20 May 2012. The Bootleg Beatles were formed from the West Ends cast of the Broadway musical 'Beatlemania', The Bootleg Beatles career began in 1980- almost 10 years to the day since Sir Paul McCartney announced the originals had split. It didn't take long for The Bootleg Beatles international reputation to grow immensely, mainly due to the bands many successful concert tours abroad. Having seen the Bootlegs at the 94 Glastonbury Festival, Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis asked them to be the support act for their record breaking 1995 Earl Court shows- culminating with both bands and sharing the stage for 'I Am The Walrus'. Since becoming regulars on the festival circuit, The Bootleg Beatles have played Wembley with Rod Stewart and Elton John and shared the same bill with The Corrs, David Bowie and Iggie Pop. Don't miss The Bootlegs along with their mini orchestral ensemble in their very first Australian Tour.

SCHUBERT Piano Quintet, Trout MESSIAEN Quartet for the End of Time Helena Rathbone Violin Christopher Moore Viola Timo-Veikko Valve Cello Maxime Bibeau Double Bass Paul Dean Clarinet Saleem Abboud Ashkar Piano This concert pairs two great works inspired by very different experiences away from home, both written for the musicians available and, as a result, for unusual combinations of instruments. Aged 22, Schubert had his first holiday in the country. In the Trout, he captures the mood of those carefree summer days and his ecstatic delight in the countryside, in warm, beguiling melodies and harmonies. A prisoner of war, Messiaen wrote the Quartet for the End of Time for the musicians he found in the camp, premiering it to an audience of inmates and guards. ?Never? he said, "was I listened to with such rapt attention and comprehension." Critic Alex Ross calls it ?the most ethereally beautiful music of the 20th century...as overpowering now as it was on that frigid night in 1941.? ACO Principals are joined by clarinettist Paul Dean and dynamic young pianist Saleem Abboud Ashkar, making his Australian debut. http://www.aco.com.au/trout

Germany and Japan are renowned for great cars and great pianos. Industrious and serious, it?s no wonder they produce exceptional musicians. Making their Australian debut, Berlin?s most fascinating quartet meets this internationally acclaimed Japanese violist to showcase some the world?s most beautiful string quintets. Like a finely tuned machine, humming and full of life, this is one of the best string quintet performances you?re ever likely to hear. The Kuss Quartet is a regular at Carnegie and Wigmore Halls and Shimizu was the first female Principal Viola of the Berlin Philharmonic. From classics by Mozart and Brahms to a world premiere by Kerry, these five musicians perform the landmarks of the string quintet at the highest possible level. Student Rush Tickets available at the door- $15 (pending availability) Tickets from $30- $73

Musica Viva- Anthony Marwood & Aleksandar Madzar Venue: Newcastle Conservatorium of Music

Like a good wine and an old cheese, Marwood and Mad?ar go really well together. In fact, rarely have two musicians clicked so well on stage. They?re so in sync, they?ve even been referred to as musical soul mates. Friends and collaborators for over twenty years, both are among the best on their instrument in the world. Marwood?s cerebral and expressive style is contrasted perfectly with the natural brilliance of Mad?ar. I t?s a special connection: as if two old friends are getting together to have a laugh, share their secrets and generally chew the fat. With adventurous repertoire from Beethoven, Debussy and Schubert, they just seem to get each other. We?re pretty sure you?ll get them too. Student Rush Tickets at the Door- $15 (pending availability) Tickets range from $30- $80

PROKOFIEV (arr. Barshai/Tognetti) Visions fugitives SHOSTAKOVICH Piano Concerto No.1 SHOSTAKOVICH Octet TCHAIKOVSKY Souvenir de Florence Richard Tognetti Artistic Director and Lead Violin Steven Osborne Piano David Elton Trumpet As soon as he played with the ACO, Steven Osborne wanted to return with Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No.1, for it requires an immensely virtuosic string orchestra, flexibility and humour veering on craziness. The time has now come with this all-Russian concert. Brimming with carefree energy, Tchaikovsky?s Souvenir is an exuberant postcard from an Italian summer holiday. ?The ACO...set the audience in a spin with its heady version of Tchaikovsky?s Souvenir de Florence. Richard Tognetti was intent on making the most of the Russian nostalgia, romancing his violins, sending the audience into a clapping frenzy.? Herald Sun http://www.aco.com.au/russian-visions
