Newcastle Memorial Walk
Walks & Rides Newcastle City Centre
Newcastle Memorial Walk, with its striking 360 degree views of the city and coast, provides a spectacular connection to Newcastle's Bathers Way.
Hours: 24 hours
The Newcastle Memorial Walk was constructed to commemorate the centenary of ANZAC. The original concept for the project was a one-way walk along the cliff top with visitors having to turn around at the viewing platform and return the way they came via Strzelecki lookout. While this still would have been a remarkable project, the addition of the stairway to connect the walk to the Bathers Way is a fantastic addition enabling a 430m boardwalk providing visitors with a range of options for enjoying the walk. The Bathers Way, the six kilometre stretch of coast from Nobbys Beach in the north to Merewether Beach in the south, is being progressively transformed as part of Newcastle City Council's coastal revitalisation program. We have also completely overhauled the shared pathways at Stockton, connecting the area to the 1400km NSW Coastline Cycleway. The Merewether to Dixon Park stretch of the project has made the area almost unrecognisable. Less than five years ago this was an area with a one metre wide foot path and very few redeeming features aside from the magnificent beach. Now the area is a bustling place for exercise, relaxation and everything in between. More than two million people visit our beaches every year and with new experiences and improvements all along our coast this number will continue to increase. We expect the city's newest experience, Newcastle Memorial Walk, will be a very popular drawcard for locals and visitors for many years to come.
