Newcastle, as the 3rd leg of 4 stops (Gold Coast, Margaret River, Newcastle and Bells) on the Australian pro surfing tour, plays host to 11 days of non-stop surfing action in one of Australia's most beautiful cities.
Surfest is Australia's largest surfing festival and Newcastle's only annual international sporting event. When it burst onto the world stage in 1985, it was the world's richest surfing competition. It now attracts more than 200 surfers, with many coming from around the globe, including the United States, Hawaii, Brazil, Japan, South Africa, New Zealand and France. The list of winners of the event, including eight-time world champion Kelly Slater, is like a "Whose Who" of professional surfing. Surfest celebrates its 25th birthday in 2010.
The event is more than a great surf competition - it is a celebration of a city and its people and their special relationship with Australian beach culture.
Make sure you check out Wine & Waves Food and Wine Festival at Jefferson Park, Merewether Beach on 13 & 14 March 2010.
